Lead In A Way You Can Stand Behind

Lead with heart, and you’re “too soft.” Lead with logic, and you’re “too cold.” Welcome to leadership.

People will find something to attack regardless of how you lead, so lead in a way you can stand behind.

It used to be, “Would you rather be feared or loved?” Now, it’s “Would you rather be ‘too soft’ or ‘too cold’?”

✅ When Satya Nadella took over as CEO of Microsoft in 2014, he made emotional intelligence, empathy, and collaboration the centerpieces of the company’s culture.

He talked openly about kindness, humility, and leading with a growth mindset.

Some people accused him of being “too soft.”

✅ When Jeff Bezos built Amazon, he focused on data and efficiency, even when it came at the cost of psychological safety.

He was known for intense meetings and valuing metrics over feelings.

Many critics accused him of being “too cold.”

The results spoke for themselves:

👉 Under Nadella’s “too soft” leadership, Microsoft’s culture improved, innovation returned, and the stock price increased 1,000% over the last 11 years.

👉 Under Bezos’ “too cold” leadership, Amazon has also found unbelievable success.

One of the toughest parts of leadership is realizing that no matter which way you go, someone will find a reason to criticize you. You’re either “too much” of one thing or “not enough” of the other.

If you try to be everything to everyone, you’ll end up pleasing no one.

💡 Find a path that allows you to lead without losing your authentic self or your integrity, regardless of whether you end up being “too soft,” “too cold,” or somewhere in between.

What type of leader do you aspire to be?
