Mastering Leadership: Simple Principles for Success

Leadership is simple, but not easy.

The chef made it look effortless. A smooth, precise sequence that ended with a perfect cone of rice, fish, and seaweed.

Three years ago, I got my family an in-home sushi-making class as a Christmas Gift. It was just like out of a movie when a wise old chef showed up at our door to share one of life’s secrets with us.

The first thing he taught us was to make a handroll. It’s super simple to create one. You spread a thin layer of rice on a seaweed sheet, sprinkle on some chopped fish, pick it up in one hand, and then roll it up in one motion using your other hand.

The chef demonstrated the technique, and then we proceeded to make our own. It was chaos: broken sheets of seaweed, fish spilling out, rice stuck on shirts, and rolls falling apart.

👉 The chef laughed and said, “Sushi is simple, but not easy.”

I’ve been quoting that line ever since whenever I talk about leadership, trust, conflict management, or anything else that involves people.

Take building trust, for example. It’s simple, there are only three ingredients:

✅ Tell the truth.
✅ Keep your commitments.
✅ Respect confidentiality.

Yet, despite its simplicity, we often find it difficult to build trust in our relationships because life is complex and messy. It’s hard to tell the truth when you’re under pressure, under deadlines, your job is on the line, or there’s only one promotion and five people competing for it.

The same thing happens with leadership. The fundamentals are pretty straightforward, but the challenge lies in maintaining consistency during times of adversity, tension, or discomfort.

💡 Mastery takes more than knowledge; it’s about being able to do something well, again and again, when it matters most.
